LifeStraw: The Revolutionary Ultrafilter Membrane Water Purifier

In a world where access to clean drinking water is a growing concern, innovative solutions are crucial to ensuring the health and well-being of communities worldwide. One such solution is the LifeStraw, an ultrafilter membrane water purifier that has been making waves in the water purification industry. This portable, efficient, and highly effective device has the ability to remove an astonishing 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and contaminants from water, making it safe for drinking.

How it Works

The LifeStraw uses a unique ultrafilter membrane technology that has tiny pores, which block out bacteria, viruses, and parasites, while allowing clean water to pass through. The membrane has a pore size of 0.2 microns, which is small enough to filter out even the smallest waterborne pathogens. This means that water contaminated with harmful microorganisms, such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Rotavirus, can be safely purified, making it drinkable.

Easily add activated carbon inline filter for ultimate protection!
I won’t cover use and setup that other reviewers and videos have already covered and are easily searchable. I’ll list the main factors that convinced me to buy this system over all the others.1. Covers bacteria/protozoa and VIRUSES. Rare to find virus filtration in a hollow membrane products. You usually have to resort to chemical purification for virus removal, which may distort taste or just add inconvenient waiting time.2. Cost:longevity ratio with virus filtration. This system is approximately $158 for a 0.02 micron membrane lasting 18,000 liters and covers viruses. MSR Guardian is $300+ lasting 10,000 liters. Grayl geopress/ultrapress is approximately $90-$200 for a measly 150-250L lifespan, but includes activated carbon filtration. Hands down, this Lifestraw product is best long-term value if you’re looking for included viral purification.3. Large volume filtration: Comes with a 8L bag. However, the threads of the inlet and outlet allow you to connect it to ANY 28mm bottle or bag system to adjust your filtration volume needs.4. Can add activated carbon: For this much longevity, I really couldn’t find another system that also filtered with activated carbon to remove chemicals and improve taste. However, it is easy to add an activated carbon filter by purchasing ANY inline filter system that has 28mm threads. For cheapest, go with hydroblu activated carbon filter for their versaflow system, which lasts 150L and is only $7.95. Screws right onto the outlet of this Lifestraw system and now you have a complete system of bacteria/protozoa/virus/chemicals for under $170. I FIND THIS AN AMAZING VALUE.

    Huge
8L of water is a lot of weight to hang on a tree branch. I like that it has a built in strap for hanging. Filters water quickly so you have plenty of clean water on hand.I wish that it came with a clean bag, too.

    Great filtration
It’s easy to use, and easy to pack up. It would be nice if it had a small pocket to keep the plunger and things in. It has great water flow and makes it easy to fill water bottles.

    Great camp filter
I love gravity filters so much. They make long trips so much easier when I’m not pumping water through a filter 10 times a day. This filter is right on the edge of being too heavy for backpacking, but I would still use it because it is really tough and all the parts have more than one use, so it makes it a very efficient use of the weight. This one is unique in the fact that it only has one reservoir – other brands have two – one for dirty water and another for clean. But this system assumes that you’ll filter in place as you are waiting for the water to dispense, and that’s just as good as working from a bag of clean water. Plus it really prevents the confusion that can occur as you are setting up the system. There’s no chance that you are going to consume water from the dirty reservoir and compromise your body. And with the lifestraw filter working no matter what happens to the water bag, the system has some flexibility if the reservoir is punctured or otherwise damaged. It’s a great system from a great company – worth the money for sure.

Perfect for Groups, Let Gravity do the Work
I’ve always been a little critical of LifeStraw products because I really don’t like to have to suck hard on a straw to take a drink. This one is great because it uses gravity. This is a bit large for backpacking except in the situation where you are backpacking in a group. With our little backpacking group we usually break of the tasks when we stop to make camp. We all get the tent and sleeping arrangement settled and then one person starts dinner while someone else goes to get water. We usually carry a small pump filter and while this is considerably heavier at just over 1.5 lbs, it makes the whole deal of getting and filtering water a breeze. A quick fill of the 2 gallon bag takes seconds and your are headed back to camp. It has also changed the dynamic of how to use filtered water. It is no longer a precious commodity that takes time and energy. The filtered water doesn’t flow fast from the filter but it does flow. Enough that you don’t have to stress if someone is using filtered water for cleaning for example.I do wish there was a lighter version of this better suited for backpacking but for now it is a great solution for backpacking in small to medium size groups.Overall happy with the “LifeStraw Peak Series – Gravity Water Purifier System with 8L Bag and Hanging Strap for Camping, Hiking, Emergency preparedness, Survival and Adventure Travel. Removes viruses, Bacteria + parasites”.
