Andi Brown saved my GSD’s life!
As far as the review technicalities, the book was easy to read. Andi explains things in a simple way so you don’t need a degree in biology to understand it. Some good recipes and guidelines. It’s more guidance than recipes; however, it’s pretty much the basics of everything you need. In addition, she refers you to many other books by other authors to further your studies. How has this book impacted our lives? Angel, my 10 yr old German Shepherd Dog, has suffered from allergies for most of her life. Switching dog foods from this to that and different medicines. Up to this book, she was losing a large amount of hair due to skin allergies/infections, perianal fistulas due to allergies, constantly inflamed ears, and arthritis. Her main med was cyclosporine, but she’d occasionally cycle off to prednisone and some kind of anti-biotic for infections. Over long-term use of cyclosporine, her immune system was shot. She got the skin infection, eye infections, and bordatella immediately after a vet visit (and she had her bordatella vaccine less than a year before!) “Well, 10 is getting old for a GSD. She’s just showing her age,” people would say. It’s true, 10 is getting old for a GSD, but I just looked at her and felt she had more. It’s been a month since we’ve started Andi’s regimen, and Angel has been off all her meds for exactly 2 weeks. Not only are her old allergy problems not coming back, but she acts like she’s 6 or 7. Full of energy. Now, I’ll be honest. It’s a lot of work making your own dog food, but it can be done. I was already super busy and didn’t think I could manage making dog food. I did and still do. The more I do it, the faster I get. My process gets better.Kudos to Andi for saving my Angel’s life because this surely would have been her last year. If your dog has chronic issues, get the book and do what it says.

Doc’s Stew is helping my dog (and me) tremendously
I bought this book several years ago and several times fixed Doc’s Stew for my two dogs, who liked it, but after a few days seemed to grow tired of it. They were young and healthy then, and the urgency to help them was not as strong as it is now. So we went back to commercial and other feeding methods. Now my terrier/chihuahua mix Lyra is 11, Ranger (14) died six months ago. Since puppyhood Lyra’s been a difficult eater, likes a food for a day or two, then wants something different. Most of her life, she also had occasional episodes of severe gastrointestinal distress, her tummy made squeaking noises, she had diarrhea, wouldn’t eat for a day or two, and had to go outside all hours of the night and/or day to eat grass and vomit. These episodes became more frequent in the last six months. So last spring when she started losing weight, it didn’t seem that out of the ordinary. But her weight loss continued. Several vet visits, bloodwork, and an abdominal ultrasound showed a mass in her bladder, slightly enlarged liver, and a nodule on her spleen. Miraculously, The Whole Pet Diet resurfaced from my bookshelf and I gave it another try. I fixed the newest version of Doc’s Stew (on Andi’s website), and Lyra liked it for 1-3 days, then refused to eat. I tried other recipes from the book, then recipes from another dog cookbook. She’d eat them once, and maybe have an episode, or not eat them at all, so I was back at square one. She’s still losing weight, and I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on tests to determine what the mass in her bladder is, etc. Only to spend thousands more on chemo, when it likely won’t cure whatever it is anyway. I definitely am not giving her the prescription dog foods that all the vets want her to have. So in desperation, I contacted Andi (several times) via email. Each time she replied within minutes and offer suggestions and answered my questions, but I obviously wasn’t getting it. Finally, I kept failing at keeping Lyra to continue to eat Doc’s Stew, I contacted Andi again. She said, let’s talk on the phone. On the phone Andi assured me that Lyra didn’t need a variety of foods, Doc’s Stew was sufficient. So together, we decided when the Stew was freshly made I should freeze double portions, thawing directly before her meals, and always feeding at room temperature. Andi suggested I feed her twice a day, but because Lyra is still losing weight, I feed her three times a day. Andi also suggested when Lyra’s acting finicky, to offer small toppings (1/2 t) of lamb, Lyra’s favorite, to get her digestive juices flowing. Lyra cannot tolerate lamb as her main protein source. Andi said chicken is the most easily digestible protein, the veggies make it healthy too, and the salmon adds the Omega 3’s. No oatmeal for Lyra for now, too difficult to digest. For the last three weeks or so, we’ve been on a schedule. She eats Doc’s Stew eagerly almost every time (about every 4 hours), unless I try breakfast a little too early. As far as I know her cancer is still there, as she’s still losing weight, but occasionally weight stays the same for a week or two. But most importantly since she’s eating just Doc’s Stew, she hasn’t had an episode. Except when my grandkids were over and dropped ground beef and sweet potatoes on the floor. Her skin has improved and is no longer flaky when I comb her. The little eye boogies she used to have are mostly gone now. And the routine makes life so much more pleasant! I don’t dread feeding her, because I know she will eat it, eagerly. She seems comfortable. I walk her more often, helping her lymph system to function better. I am hopeful that the cancer will go away. I also ordered a fecal test from AnimalBiome. One of AnimalBiome’s major suggestions was to add more fiber to Lyra’s diet, which I had already begun with Doc’s Stew. There is a whole lot more to the diet and book than Doc’s Stew. I highly recommend the book. What a small investment for significant rewards. How much is one vet visit? Andi Brown genuinely cares for our pets and us. She is an angel, and I am not the first to call her that. Thank you Andi for all you have done for me and Lyra and continue to do for us all.

This book saved my dog’s life
My 9-year-old mastiff suffered all his life with scratching, hot spots, and bloating. In addition, he was obese despite numerous “diets” prescribed by the vets (yes, vets…none could help). The elimination diets to find his “allergies” were a complete waste of time and the diet food works only because he wouldn’t eat it. We have been on the whole pet diet for five months now. The scratching has completely stopped. He has lost 22 pounds and has more energy than he had when he was a year old. He smells wonderful, his teeth are amazingly white, he no longer shakes his head from ear problems, and he no longer needs all of the doggie steps and stools that were strategically placed around my house. This author has delivered the most common-sense information that WILL positively change your pets life. I think of all the suffering my boy went through and all the money I spent at vets and it makes me sick. I am confident that any pet will gain the same benefits that my boy has. It is all natural, and all common sense. I highly reccomend the book to everyone who has a dog or cat. I found this book as I was preparing to say good-bye to my boy. I no longer even think about “the end”. He has so much energy I can’t imagine that we won’t have another ten years together.

Lots of good information for anyone wanting to feed their dog home cooked meals

The other recommends garlic for cat when everywhere we can read that small amount can kill them, so what to do? I scare to try

  7. Emo

The diet for dogs with Kidney issues was great as it stabilised the kidney function in both our dogs,

I would recommend this book to any one who is considering making their own pet food. My little dog was suffering from compromised immune system and I was searching for some help. Once I read this book, I was convinced that this approach was my solution and it has proven to be very helpful. She loves the home made food and I love the whole idea of knowing she is getting good healthy meat and vegetables every day. I will never go back to feeding her kibble.
