Essential book for pet owners
This is an essential book for pet owners that ought to come standard issue with a new puppy. My 12 year old golden is a retired working dog (and a titled champion hunting retriever and therapy dog) whose health and attitude began to take a turn for the worse a few years ago. He lacked his usual energy and his vets reassured me that given his chronic kidney failure and glaucoma I ought to be relieved that he had lived this long and that after all, hardly anyone else would have kept him alive this long. I know the vet was trying to make me feel better when she said, he may live another year or two, but it was terrible to hear. The answer to every ailment seemed to be pain medication and steroids and I thought I was providing him with the best veterinary medical care money could buy. I had been down this road before with aging pets and it is essentially the answer to most ailments from arthritis to allergies; a pharmacy of drugs that makes for lethargic animals and rarely treats the underlying causes, just the symptoms of illnesses, pain and injury.I wish I had Dr. Royal’s book years ago because it would have improved my life (saved me countless hours of researching and worry) and that of my beloved working dog and best friend. Following Dr. Royal’s suggestions (the same ones offered for the cheap price of this book-perhaps the best bargain an animal lover can get), my dog lost weight almost immediately and what I did not expect was that his energy level and love of life has returned. Same dog, just looks and acts years younger…so much so that people have asked if my 12 year old half blind dog is a 3 or 4 year old dog. Where was this book six years ago when I tried every type of specialty dog food and researched everything on diet and nutrition online? Save yourself the time and worry that I took and buy this single book.Dr. Royal presents an integrative approach to veterinary health-one that combines conventional and holistic medical protocols-along with her rationale. I am a committed skeptic and the proof of her approach (outlined in this book) is there before me in my beloved dog. I know at long last that whatever fate may bring, at least I am finally giving him the best medical care-I now know how.This book is also a fun book to read, if you have ever loved an animal-it presents a great deal of information in a fun and humorous manner, often told through entertaining and heartwarming stories. I picked it up for facts and read it from cover to cover in a single sitting-except for the last chapter on saying goodbye-I am not ready to read that one yet.Do yourself a favor-buy this book!

Fantastic book, very informative with wonderful information. It has helped me change my dogs diet and get her off of a mainly grain food source and into a healthier diet program. Also help me determine that my dogs allergies were in fact from her food, the brand I was using claimed to be grain free when in actuality it was not!I also changed her treats to freeze dried liver bit from a grain biscuit, No more itching or weeping eyes.I highly recommend reading this book, it opened my eye up to all the possibilities that are available in caring for my dog to the best of my ability.Great information for Cat owner also, went into all aspect of their health as well.

Perfect Gift For Any Pet Lover
My cat Chester was very sick with complications from liver failure. As a last resort I decided to explore a more holistic approach & we were referred to Dr. Royal. Everything from the time we arrived to any follow up questions was a positive experience. Her book just came out when I took Chester to see her last fall. It has become a book that I refer to almost weekly. It has completely changed my attitude & understanding of what I feed my dog & cats. Dr. Royal has several stories from when she worked at Lincoln Park Zoo which are very interesting & entertaining. Dr. Royal is very calm & thoughtful when you meet her in person. The great thing about her book is that it genuinely reflects who she is when you meet her in person.This book will be my new gift for new pet owners…. It made a great Christmas gift for several friends.

I saw Dr. Royal on the documentary Pet Fooled and could not wait to read this book. Her love of animals comes thru. I adored the stories and the general tone of the book. My only complaint is that as with so many other books on pet health, this one is dog centric. After stating that cats, more than dogs need a high protein diet, most of her book concerns dogs and what to feed them.In one section on diet for pets with kidney disease she suggest giving human vitamin B supplement but , gives the dosage for a dog but not a cat. Cats commonly have kidney disease, if I am not mistaken this is a leading cause of death for cats.She gives great info on diets for pets in ill health but, having stated that cats do not process carbs her diets for pets include rice…..I have studied cat nutrition for years and know better than to stuff my cats ( sick or not) with something like rice but others may not.Thats it, loved the book, love her passion for feeding our pets what they were designed to eat . I wish she had made it crystal clear to her readers what cats should and should not eat.Her recipes include lots of veggies etc.I was especially sad to see no cancer diet for cats.

Can I sing it from the rooftops? THIS is an excellent book!
After searching desperately as to how to help my six year old Maltese Terrier who is overweight and does not enjoy walks (he’s a rescue that still experiences some anxiety) I found this book. I could not put it down. It was like a balm to my wounded spirit. Her intelligence, experience and love for all animals comes through every page. Because of her, I switched to Instinct canned small breed dog food, and mix it with Jake’s dry Call of the Wild. Today was our first day, and it was a success! I ordered two more copies – one for a friend that has an older dog with allergy issues (she, too, has switched to a raw food diet) and one for my daughter-in-law who just started working in a veterinarian office and wanted to read it to become more familiar and educated with treating all types of animals.

Adopt a Wellness Care Mindset and Avoid Traditional Sick Care
Excellent. Really helped me elevate my pets health. Like humans, pets are exposed to toxins in the tap water and the processed foods they are fed. Look at what they are eating and drinking first. No tap water. Make them organic meals! Great advice! So simple but makes a world of difference. Great gen charts as well. Simply amazing!

Five stars. Altough it was not mainly focused on dog’s food, it mentions enough to clarify my previous ideas on the subject. It includes a basic recipe to feed my pet.It’s entertaining, I loved reading several stories of unhealthy animals which came back to their natural condition through food changes, accupuncture and more.The only thing I don’t like so much is that I live out of the United States and cannot afford traveling there to have an appointment with her for my sick doggie.Anyway, it has enlightened me enough to recommend this book to all pet lovers.Thanks, Dr. Barbara Royal, for all you have showed us and for your helping so many pets and wild animals in captivity.(Cinco estrellas) Aunque no está principalmente enfocado en la comida para perros, menciona suficiente para aclarar mis ideas sobre el tema.
