A great Go resource for experienced engineers
I’ve been using Go at work for the past 5 years and was looking for a resource aimed at people who have a decent grasp of the basics but still want to get to the next level.I had the great fortune of attending a workshop that Bill Kennedy gave a couple of years ago; I found his teaching style relatable while not being condescending. So I was thrilled to see this book mentioned on Reddit. I’m not even halfway through it and I’ve already learned way more than I would have on my own.If you’re a fan of books like Fluent Python and Eloquent JavaScript, you’ll find this to be an invaluable resource.

Great book to have going along side of the class
I took the class before the book existed, and took lots of time noting down everything. This would have saved lots of time. And yes, the class is expensive, but they do offer scholarships to which anyone could apply.

Might be good if you attend the class
This book reads like someone’s notes they jotted down while attending a class. From what I understand that is pretty much how the book was created. I’ve tried getting into this book several times but the writing style is too jarring and I always feel like I missed the class where this stuff was covered (I haven’t taken the class, so, yes, I did miss it!). If you take the class, you might get some value out of it but as a standalone book, I can’t recommend it.

If you’re looking for ANYTHING related to learning the Go language this is not the book for you. It reads in a first-person style narrative which is extremely odd and abrasive. However, if you want a strange book based on an overpriced online course full of quotes and schizo ramblings from admittedly knowledgeable individuals then this is the book for you!I suggest getting Learning Go: An Idiomatic Approach to Real-World Go Programming, The Art of Go, and Writing a Interpreter/ Compiler in Go instead of this garbage.

Disorganized Version of Go Docs Website
I’m not sure why this book is so highly rated. It basically is the ramblings of someone learning the golang docs. This book is bascially just a disorganized rewrite of the golang website documentation. The golang website effective go and golang tour would be a better use of your time and save you some money.

Despite having programmed in Go for a year and a half at this point, this is the first programming book (of any kind) I’ve picked up. As someone with some experience of the language but not the literature surrounding it, I found this book to be extremely accessible and an absolutely brilliant way for me to rapidly skill up in regards to writing Go. In particular, I was really impressed with the code benchmarking, profiling and tracing chapters towards the end, and I really appreciated the succinct and relevant depth that Bill Kennedy went into regarding mechanical sympathy and what the language is doing to the hardware under the hood. I hadn’t previously appreciated how a seemingly superficial change to the code could have dramatic effects to performance. Bill always brings back any deeper ‘theory’ to practical application, so none of this information is superfluous, and every time I finished a chapter on something I’d not investigated online before, I felt like he’d done me a favour.Like so many things, I could have saved myself a lot of time and really fast tracked my development had I picked a book like this up years ago. I’m now very tempted to go back and read the previous book, Go in Action, in case I’ve missed any other langauge essentials…

Excellent book. Totally recommended for someone having prior knowledge on other Programming language. It touches upon matters related to the fundamentals of the Software Engineering, the mechanical Sympathy and deep dives into the specifics on writing idiomatic, highly performant Go code.

As Bill said, this notebook actually goes in more depth that you would expect, for me in a VERY positive way. It helped me get a better understanding not only Go, but also on how computers actually work.
