The world of veterinary medicine is changing. People are realizing that if alternative medicine is better for them, it’s better for their pets, too. Dogs are visiting acupuncturists, chiropractic doctors, and homeopaths. Still, many dog owners are unaware that such simple measures as changing their pet’s diet and using vitamins, herbs, and other natural cures can help prevent or heal ailments ranging from excessive scratching to depression to a host of serious diseases.
The Veterinarians’ Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs is both an introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural healing methods, treatments, and foods now available for dogs. Author Martin Zucker offers advice from dozens of holistic practitioners and licensed veterinarians, who share their recipes, insights, and “prescriptions.” Here dog owners will find information on everything from nutritional supplements to massage therapy, as well as how these treatments can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional medications and surgical techniques.

Insightful Options for Holistic Dog Care by Its Human
I rarely if ever write reviews but it was important that I did so for this book because it really opened my eyes to the options of holistic medicine in care of our dog. I had to let others know how well organized & insightful the book was because we has humans have been entrusted with our dogs’ lives, so we should know of natural options, as well as the oft relied upon western medicine practiced by most vets here in the States. When Dr. Joseph Demers spoke of “internal heat” generated by dry dog food, I couldn’t believe what I was reading because he was specifically describing our dog’s reaction to the high end/priced food we were feeding our dog. It was then & there that it clicked for me to explore natural health care options even more so to help our beloved canine with his medical issues. The book not only addresses many particular problems, such as arthritis, digestive & skin disorders, allergies, even cancer but also provides proactive measures to follow to maintain good health before your dog becomes ill, esp feeding options and nutritional supplements. And you know what? It’s very much like what we humans should be doing. To get a more definitive idea, click on the “Look Inside” feature to review the table of contents for the specific topics, as well as resources and recommended reading. You’ll be glad you did and so will you dog!

Covers all the bases
He mentions diet, homeopathy, ayurveda, but doesn’t go overboard in theory. Some advice is so simple such as giving your dog a gingersnap if he is prone to flatulence.

Practically saved my dogs life.
My large male malamute/husky/collie dog had an undiagnosed/misdiagnosed problem that a couple very qualified vets should have been able to figure out. The symptom was his constant licking of his anus. I do mean constant, the poor guy was miserable and the only diagnosis I’d received was that he was probably allergic to the secretions from his own anal glands and he should have surgery to remove the glands. A horrendously horrible procedure that was completely unnecessary and cruel. Dr. Marty’s book explained that most dogs (and cats) are malnourished due to the food they receive (no matter how good, lol, and how expensive) being so processed that all the nutrients have been cooked out of the food. At Dr. Marty’s suggestion, I immediately put my dog on Prozyme which is a type of digestive enzyme supplement. Within two weeks the obsessive licking was gone and I had a much healthier, happy dog. I would suggest everyone put all their pets on digestive enzymes, after discussing with their vet of course, as I have. I find that my pets are much, much healthier and both they and I am happy. Thank you Dr. Marty, I will never forget all of your help.

Close but no cigar!!
I read five or six books on Naturopathic vet medicine after a Vet crippled my dog with vaccines and melted his tendons down with a harmful antibiotic. Then the vet wanted to shoot my dog up with carcinogenic steroids. Always give your dog/cat a high dose of vitamin C before , the day after and for a month after any vaccination. See Thomas Levy, ‘Panacea’ on how to dose. .While this book was the best, it offered no real solutions to my problems. In addition these supposedly ‘top class’ naturopath vets seem to know little about Materia Medica, and Orthomolecular Medicine which are not only applicable to humans but pets. They completely miss how to treat a dog/cat naturally for an 80 % success rate for cancer. I was disgusted by the medical ignorance of vets and shocked naturopathic vets know so little!!I had studied Orthomolecular medicine, in particular Orthomolecular Medicine for Everyone and Orthomolecular Medicine for Physcians by Dr. Abram Hoffer, which I suggest reading before this book and studied biomedical engineering in college so these vets don’t impress me much in this book. They don’t even recommend brewers yeast with garlic to treat fleas/ticks on dogs, when this supplement is available on Amazon but not from the vets or pets stores due to the amount of money the carcinogenic flea repellents generate.I suggest going to Swansons vitamins on line research and their pet products as a starting point after reading Hoffer on how to treat your pet naturally. Swansons products are also available on Amazon.I rebuilt my dogs tendons with high doses of vitamin C and 20k IU (my dog is 150 lbs)/2500 mcg of Vitamin K complex and mineral and amino acid supplements. He went from either having to be put down or injected with massive doses of steroids to running again in 3 months!!In addition this book leaves out the highly effective for pets and humans compound of Allicin which can treat most every viral and bacterial and fungal infection in the world. See Peter Joslings books on Allicin on Amazon.Andrew Saul, PHD in chemistry has it right at http://www.doctoryourself.com, as it is very, very hard to find a competent vet or md to treat you or your pet.Still I recommend this book to keep your vet honest and from killing or hurting your dog.

This book has been essential to the recovery of a rough haired collie I rescued and the local vet turned me away saying he couldnt cure her of demodetic mange without the strong chemicals of amitraz and ivermectin which could kill 75% of this breed. This bookgave me all the information I needed to cure my dog by safe holistic means. At the same time I called the school of veterinaries tolocate a holistic veterinary nearby. On visiting with her she was amazed at the rate of recovery and has adopted the ayurvedictreatment for demodex mange in her clinic. This book is an absolute gem for any caring dog owner.

I like this book so much I have bought another copy for a friend. Great advice for trying natural therapies for minor ailments, rather than heading straight for the vets. If like me you avoid prescription drugs for yourself and your dog then it is a good reference book. I consult it regularly.

Very interesting information, I especially enjoyed the different comments made by the many Holistic Vets that contributed to the book. One of those Vets I have worked with over the phone to help me with my Big Berner girl who had Cancer. Dr C. Loops.I find the Holistic approach to health care to be a more natural solution to problems instead of using Pharma meds all the time that contributes to other health issues down the road.Keeping an open mind is always good when it comes to health care, many cultures have used these approaches forHundreds of years, way before the pharmacy existed. Some of the info can apply to human issues as well. I like the book, good to have on hand.
