Excellent “go to” book on navigating the confusing maze of proper nutrition for cats/dogs.
There are few books I would consider purchasing, unless I knew it was a book I would read over and over. This is that kindof book.I read it cover to cover, because the information was not only enlightening and educational, but fun to read,as well.I had(underlined)to add this book to my library. It is an excellent reference so I can make better educated choices.I recommend David Wellock’s book to any pet parent.

A Book That ALL Pet Parents Will Understand!!
For those of you who are like me, “dog hobbyists or pet parents” and need and would like information and guidance from those that ARE “in-the-know”, our prayers have been answered! Enter the book Health and Nutrition for DOGS and CATS: A Guide for Pet Parents by David G. Wellock, which I am delighted to say was sent to me by the author, to share with all of YOU!For me, this is not a book that I would sit and read the way I would a novel, rather, it is an invaluable resource that I will refer to again and again. Take a look at a few of the chapter topics and you will see why:The Rise of Pet FoodsShopping for your Pet’s FoodHow to Read a Pet Food PackageNutrition and OsteoarthritisDental DetailsUrinary DisordersThe Scoop on PoopWant to know?About grain-free diets?Red-flag ingredients that should NEVER be in the food that you purchaseOne of my personal favorites from this book is a list of:Dave’s Table Scrap Rules:Leftovers designated for your pets should consist of lean meats and veggiesAll things in moderationPortion controlJust to name a few! What I love about Dave, (yes, “Dave!” is that his writing style isn’t lecturing, condescending or “preachy”, his style is such that you feel as if you can have a conversation with him without feeling intimidated!) also, that after fourteen years in the pet food business (he had opened his own store!), he is “still learning about cats and dogs and their nutrition and health issues.” Dave says: ” Much of the knowledge I have acquired over these years has come to me as a result of interaction with customers and their pets. My store became my school, and my customers and their pets my teachers. My opinions are anecdotal rather than scientific, based on my experiences in dealing with thousands of customers and their pets. Hopefully whatever passes for wisdom and insight on the pages of this book will benefit you, my fellow two-footers, in your dealings with those furry family members sharing your life.”There you have it, a book written for the “dog hobbyist” (as I like to refer to myself) or as Dave lovingly says “parent of a pet” or “paropet.” A book written in language that even I can make sense of, I am certain that you will be able to as well!

    Two Stars
there really isn’t a lot of information in this book. Nothing particular to do more than vaguely guide you.

    Very Useful Information
I try very hard to get good food for my beloved cat and I thought I had found it, until I read this book. Yes, the first thing on the label was chicken, but the second thing was chicken by-products. I need to read the whole label, not just the first item! This book was an invaluable guide to what to feed your pet. It is quite comprehensive and up to date. The chapters include how to shop for your pets food, how to read the label on the package, with chapters including the pet’s weight and the pet obesity epidenic, the future of pet food, arthritis and your pet’s food, allergies, dental issues and chapters on poop and pee and the various probems that arise from them.I loved this author’s sense of humor! For some, books a book on pet nutrition could prove to be a bit boring, but this author makes it a delightful read and his advice is easy to understand. I know my cat will definitely benefit from the knowledge I acquired in reading this book and I think anyone else’s pet will too. — Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas

A Book Every Pet Parent Should Have at Home!
Whenever I get a book about health and nutrition, I look for two things to see if it’s worth my time reading. I want to know the author’s stance on the raw food diet and vaccinations. I wasn’t very confidence opening the book, because David G. Wellock isn’t a holistic veterinarian; he’s the owner of a franchised Global Pet Foods store in Canada. Well, the “Canada” gave me a little more confidence, because I’ve met Canadians who embrace the raw food diet.Flipping through the book made my heart sore! Not only did David address the raw food diet, the did it responsibly and with an open mind and I could just hug him for it! Thank you!!! And he addressed vaccinations and over vaccination as well. From there, I flipped through the book some more slowing down and reading about everything health related that I’ve experience, and before I knew it, I had read most of the book! It’s going to be an amazing resource for writing articles on Keep the Tail Wagging.~ Kimberly

Health and Nutrition for Dogs and Cats, A Guide for Pet Parents
What an informative and delightful book for owners of dogs and cats, pet parents! Good information on nutrition and health for our pets. This book guides you through the myriad information available elsewhere and gives good, straight forward advice on diet details that pet owners want to know. Serious information, but with a hint of the author’s personality peeking through. Great gift idea for pet-owning friends.

The personalized, conversational tone of this book made the reams of information accessible and entertaining. I learned a lot! I also appreciated the humorous approach (I hesitate to say thinly-veiled sarcasm at times) and the priceless ‘quotable quote’ at the beginning of each chapter. Nutrition is the foundation of health. If you care about your pet’s health, this is one book you must read. J.L. Evans
